Once a year, from mid January to mid March, thousands of North Atlantic humpback whales frolic in the waters of Samana Bay as they breed and nurse their newborn calves.
Whale watching trips in Samana Bay are among the most spectacular in the world. Visitors delight in water acrobatic feasts of mating males, romantic dances of newly weds, and tender play between mothers and babies.
Herman Melville called humpbacks “the most lighthearted and gamesome of all the whales”, and they surely prove it during their breeding season as they breach, lob, flipper, log, dive, spyhop, roll and surface – moves you’ll learn about from your boat’s captain and guides.
The waters of Samana Bay are one of the most important humpback whale nurseries in the world, and a saying goes that all North Atlantic humpback whales are really Dominican born!
